Peyronies Disease

Peyronie's Information

Peyronie’s disease is a condition where a hard lump develops in the penis. It develops on both the upper and lower sides of the penis. It starts as a simple inflammation and slowly progresses to become a hardened scar.
The symptoms of Peyronie’s disease sometime develop over time or might appear suddenly. In severe cases, the hardened lump is very painful and bends the penis when erect. While the pain might reduce over a period of time, the bend remains.

A study has found that Peyronie’s disease is fairly rare, effecting only about 1% of men. It typically afflicts older men, but there have been cases where younger men have been affected by it. However the lump that’s developed in Peyronie’s disease is benign – it’s not cancerous.

Doctors can usually diagnose Peyronie’s disease through a physical examination only. However, the extent of the affliction might not be apparent unless examined when the penis is erect. The physician might inject medication to induce erection.

Peyronie’s disease is still not understood completely. Sometimes the symptoms recede by themselves. Normally doctors don’t attempt aggressive treatments without waiting, sometimes for 1 to 2 years. If the symptoms exist after that extended period of time, treatment is advised.

Some doctors have reported that Vitamin E, taken in small dosage has shown improving Peyronie’s disease. Many chemical agents have been injected in an attempt to arrest symptoms of Peyronie’s disease. Some of them are collagenase, steroids, calcium channel blockers, and interferon alpha-2b. These chemical agents are injected directly into the hardened lump. Radiation therapy has also been attempted, though it could have negative side effects.
Surgery to implant intra penile device to improve the rigidity of the penis is often done to treat Peyronie’s disease. Though surgery usually results in positive results, doctors don’t recommend it other than in the most severe cases where the penis is bent significantly.
